Alabama football losing a trio of wide receivers to the Transfer Portal

In the wake of missing the College Football Playoff, Alabama has seen several players declare their intentions to enter the NCAA's Transfer Portal. No position has been hit harder than wide receiver so far.

It has been a disappointing day for Alabama football. Early this afternoon, the Crimson Tide was left out of the College Football Playoff, setting up a ReliaQuest Bowl matchup with Michigan in Tampa on New Year's Eve.

In the aftermath of missing the playoff, several players have begun declaring their intentions to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. No position has been hit harder than that so far than wide receiver.

Last week, Kobe Prentice announced his decision to enter the Transfer Portal. On Sunday, freshman Caleb Odom and junior Kendrick Law followed suit.

Odom's departure hurts the most as the highly-touted freshmen seemed to have a lot of potential moving forward in Tuscaloosa. He saw an increase in playing time as the season went on but managed just 65 yards on 7 receptions in his first season of college ball.

He'll be heavily sought after in the portal.

Law's loss hurts more from a blocking perspective. Law is one of the premier blocking receivers in the country, but never made much of an impact as a true wide receiver. Over the course of three seasons, Law caught 33 passes for 343 yards and a single touchdown. He was also Alabama's primary kick returner the last two seasons.

Prentice caught 31 passes as a freshman in 2022 and looked like a potential future star. Instead, Prentice seemed to regress over the last two seasons catching a combined 29 passes. As a junior, he battled injuries and managed just 11 receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown.

None of these departures are all that surprising. Law and Prentice seemed like locks to leave via the portal in search of better fits and more playing time. Odom is disappointing, however, due to the long-term potential he seemingly had in Kalen DeBoer's system.

Alabama signed two wide receivers in the 2025 recruiting class. 4-star Derek Meadows has similar size to Odom and could be seen as his ultimate replacement as a raw-skill guy with big-time potential.

Alabama's WR depth will be a question mark for the bowl game now. Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard should be available, but it remains to be seen if there will be any more roster attrition at WR between now and then. If not, Emmanuel Henderson figures to start alongside those two, and then a freshman or two will need to step up. Rico Scott and Jaren Hamilton figure to be the next men up.
