Former Alabama football DT Tim Smith was a late add to the Senior Bowl roster. He has made the most of his opportunity in Mobile in front of NFL scouts from every franchise in the league.
Smith played five years at Alabama and was a member of the Crimson Tide's last national title-winning team in 2020. He made an impact immediately as a freshman was a member of the defensive line rotation his whole career.
He never paid off the promise he showed as a young player, but was always reliable. There's a spot in the NFL for reliable players like Smith, particularly ones who have his power and can be consistent run stuffers.
Smith only managed 6.5 sacks over his five seasons in Tuscaloosa, but he has the size and strength to stonewall interior offensive linemen and be a real force stopping the run at the next level.
Trevor Sikkema with PFF noted that Smith was a standout this week at practice:
"Alabama interior defensive lineman was a standout on the final day of practice, as he was specifically chosen by the coaches for the competition period at the end of practice.
"He one-on-one versus offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea, who comes in at a stout 339 pounds. Smith decided he didn’t need anything fancy to win the rep by bull-rushing his opponent six yards back into the quarterback. He was also a standout player in run defense on the first day of practice."
The rep Sikkema references was caught on video:
Smith manhandled the opposing offensive lineman and drove him back into what would have been the lap of the quarterback if there was a passer there.
That was far from the only highlight in practice this week for Smith. He blew up a running play earlier in the week, which you can see below:
Smith came to Mobile with limited draft stock. He was mostly viewed as a late day three pick at best and most likely an undrafted free-agent. The Senior Bowl always has the ability to change the perception and Smith has done what he can to boost his stock and profile in Mobile to the point that he is looking like a player who will get drafted.
This is a big first step for Smith as he will have more opportunities to impress scouts over the next two and a half months until the draft. His performance at the Senior Bowl might be good enough to earn him a coveted invite to the NFL Combine.
