In the Week 3 ESPN Football Power Index Rankings (FPI), Alabama held firm at No. 7. Two other SEC teams also held their spots: Texas at No. 2 and the Tennessee Vols at No. 10.
The Kentucky Wildcats exploded up the FPI rankings after beating Texas A&M in College Station. The Cats moved up 15 spots to No. 36. The SEC's five other upward movers in the FPI were Georgia, up one spot to No. 3; LSU, despite losing to Ole Miss, up one spot to No. 8; Ole Miss, up four spots to No. 13; Mississippi State, up five spots to No. 22; and the Arkansas Razorbacks, up three spots to No. 74.
Down six spots in the FPI were South Carolina to No. 27 and Missouri to No. 32. Texas A&M dropped four spots to No. 12. The Vanderbilt Commodores, despite a comeback win over North Carolina State, dropped four spots to No. 43. Oklahoma dropped three spots to No. 14. The Florida Gators, despite beating Auburn on the road, dropped one spot to No. 16. Auburn dropped one spot to No. 24.
The SEC continued to dominate the FPI's Top 25, with 11 SEC teams ranked in the top 24 FPI spots. The Big Ten has seven teams in the FPI Top 25.
Arkansas has played the SEC's toughest schedule, ranking No. 2 in SOS among all FBS teams. The next toughest is Kentucky at No. 4. In the respectable SOS range are Ole Miss at No. 19, Texas at No. 21, and LSU at No. 27.
Alabama's SOS is in the middle of the SEC
The Alabama Crimson Tide's SOS is a ho-hum No. 51. The SEC's SOS dregs are South Carolina No. 86, Texas A&M No. 90, Tennessee No. 104, Missouri No. 112, Vanderbilt No. 16, and the Georgia Bulldogs No. 120.
ESPN's Efficiency Rankings will change considerably over the next few weeks. So far, they are interesting but only slightly substantive. The Georgia Bulldogs rank No. 1 in Offensive Efficiency and No. 22 in Defensive Efficiency. Alabama is ranked No. 33 (OE) and No. 12 (DE). Texas is ranked No. 9 (OE) and No. 6 (DE). LSU is No. 3 (DE), but only No. 48 (DE). Mississippi State is an impressive No. 5 (OE) and a not-bad No. 32 (DE).
