A quick note for those who have not followed my SEC Power Rankings in the past. They are unabashedly subjective. My Crimson Tide-tinted lenses likely view Alabama with too-early optimism. Although it is difficult, I try to moderate my distaste for SEC football programs: Tennessee, Auburn, and, only recently (Thank you, Lane), LSU.
Week 2 SEC Power Rankings
- No. 1 - Texas Longhorns (2-0) - Unlike ESPN's FPI, I will not punish the Horns for barely beating Ohio State. Texas beat the Buckeyes 24-23 and beat Texas State in Week 1, 59-7. Week 1 ranking: No. 1
- No. 2 - Georgia Bulldogs (2-0) - The Dawgs did not beat another school for the blind this week (66-3 over Tennessee State in Week ), but dismantled mighty Western Kentucky instead (70-20). Kirby's team is for real good. Week 1 ranking: No. 2
- No. 3 - Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0) - Alabama played one of its worst halves of football in Lexington (the offense, not the defense), and followed it with one of its best halves. At some point, Bama's offense must improve, but the defense is so good that Kane Wommack's group can save the bacon for a while. Week 1 tanking: No. 4
- No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels (2-0) - Ole Miss brushed aside Charlotte 41-9 and beat Louisville 41-38 in Week 1. Can they get some 'Lane payback' in Oxford on Saturday? Week 1 ranking: No. 5
- No. 5 LSU Bengal Tigers (2-0) - The Bengal Tigers beat Louisiana Tech 45-14, but did so in a flawed fashion. The 31-point win should be impressive, but "LSU turned the ball over four times and committed 10 penalties for 101 yards." Such flaws will not cut it against better teams. Maybe the Bengal Tigers are going to be as erratic as their head coach. Week 1 ranking: No. 3
- No. 6 Tennessee Vols (2-0) - The Vols appear explosive under freshman quarterback Faison Brandon. The defense may still have a way to go. Week 1 ranking: No. 7
- No. 6 - Texas A&M Aggies (2-0) - The Aggies led the Sun Devils 24-20 going into the fourth quarter, before exploding to a 48-20 win. Mike Elko admitted his team's offense was inconsistent, but the Aggies have enough roster talent to improve quickly. Week 1 ranking: No. 8
- No. 8 - Oklahoma Sooners (1-1) - The Sooners lost to Michigan 17-10 in the Big House. OU is strong defensively, but the offense limits the Sooners' potential to contend for a Playoff berth. Week 1 ranking: No. 6
- No. 9 Missouri Tigers (2-0) - The Tigers edge Florida for the No. 9 spot, because they beat Kansas 38-21 on the road. Week 1 ranking: No. 11
- No. 10 Florida Gators (2-0) - The Gators might be much improved, but two wins over Florida Atlantic and Campbell have proven nothing. Week 1 ranking: No. 10
- No. 11 Auburn Tigers (2-0) - Alex Golesh was not pleased with his team's penalties and a late fumble against Southern Miss, but Bryce Brown bounced back from the previous week. Week 1 ranking: No. 12
- No. 12 Mississippi State Bulldogs (2-0) - A Power road win boosts the Bulldogs, but the main reason for the bump is Bulldog quarterback Kamario Taylor, who was outstanding against Minnesota. Week 1 ranking: No. 15
- No. 13 South Carolina (2-0) - The Gamecocks are dealing with injuries. South Carolina will be much improved when defensive starters Dylan Stewart and Jacarrius Peak return. Week 1 ranking: No. 9
- No. 14 Vanderbilt Commodores (2-0) - The Dores survived a scare against Delaware, winning 35-26. Clark Lea's team needs to get better fast. Week 1 ranking: No. 13
- No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats (1-1) - Alabama aided the Wildcats greatly in Lexington, and Will Stein's team showed some spunk but was outmatched. Week 1 ranking: No. 14
- No. 16 Arkansas Razorbacks (1-1) - The Hogs lost to Utah 43-10 and have the SEC's worst passing offense. Week 1 ranking: No. 16
