Alabama LB QB Reese delivers confident message ahead of the 2026 season

With a rebuilt defensive line and the potential of an elite secondary, Alabama's biggest question sits at linebacker with youth across the board heading into 2026 — but QB Reese isn't worried

Alabama's defense enters the 2026 season with plenty of reasons for optimism.

The secondary appears poised to be one of the best units in all of college football behind the returning tandem of Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee at cornerback, while safeties Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb provide veteran leadership on the back end. Up front, Alabama has retooled its defensive line through a combination of returning talents like Yhonzae Pierre, Justin Hill, and London Simmons, alongside transfer portal additions like Devan Thompkins, Terrance Green, and Desmond Umeozulu, giving the Tide the versatility and depth needed to compete against the SEC's most physical offenses.

Yet despite the confidence surrounding those position groups, one question continues to follow Kane Wommack's defense: Can Alabama's young linebackers successfully fill the shoes left behind by the NFL departures of Deontae Lawson, Justin Jefferson, and Nikhai Green-Hill, who combined for over 200 tackles in 2025?

Kalen DeBoer and Wommack looked to address that void with the addition of senior Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson, who is penciled in as the starter heading into fall camp. But while Woodson brings experience and leadership to the room, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on younger linebackers such as QB Reese, Luke Metz, and Cayden Jones, all of whom expect to take on expanded roles alongside him this season.

Outside the program, that youth has created skepticism, as the group has yet to register a combined career start. Inside the building, however, their confidence appears to be growing. Reese reinforced that belief Tuesday evening while appearing as a special guest at the Daikin Spirit of America Golf Classic in Decatur.

Alabama redshirt sophmore linebacker QB Reese is confident in the Crimson Tide's young LB core heading into 2026

"Everybody thinks that we're young, but we're ready to play for sure," Reese said

The redshirt sophomore linebacker's comments reflect a broader belief within Alabama's entire roster that inexperience is not the same as a lack of potential. While the unit may lack proven production on Saturdays, the expectation internally is that talent and development will close the gap quickly.

With Woodson anchoring the group, that belief will be tested in real time this fall. It'll be interesting to see if Alabama's young backers can match the confidence Reese has shown with consistent production once the season starts. If they can, their play has the potential to turn the Crimson Tide's defense into one of the most complete units in all of college football.
