Alabama loses ground for Cedrick Simmons but gains momentum for another high-upside WR

As Auburn surges for Cedrick Simmons, Alabama appears to be on the verge of landing another high-upside 3-star WR.

Recruiting is rarely about landing every target. More often, it's about having answers when a recruitment doesn't go your way. That may be exactly where Kalen DeBoer and Alabama find themselves in the 2027 wide receiver cycle.

While recent recruiting buzz suggests Auburn is gaining momentum with highly-touted three-star wide receiver Cedrick Simmons, the Crimson Tide appears to be making significant progress with another intriguing pass-catching prospect: Florida wideout Kyren Caldwell

Following an official visit to Tuscaloosa this past weekend, multiple recruiting insiders logged predictions in favor of Alabama for Caldwell, who is expected to announce his commitment between Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Maryland, and Boston College on July 4. That time is difficult to ignore.

Alabama predicted to land 3-Star WR Kyren Caldwell

Simmons has long been viewed as one of Alabama's top receiver targets in the 2027 class, but as Auburn's position strengthens, Crimson Tide wide receivers coach Derrick Nix and staff appear to be shifting their attention towards a player they believe carries significant long-term upside.

At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, Caldwell may not carry the same statistical profile as Simmons, but Alabama's recent push suggests the staff sees something more than his current ranking. The three-star Columbia high school prospect possesses several traits college coaches covet in developing WRs: length, athleticism, and the ability to stretch defenses vertically.

That vertical ability showed up on film during his 2025 junior campaign, when Caldwell reeled in 48 receptions for 701 yards and eight touchdowns, while averaging 14.6 yards per grab. And though the Lake City, Florida native still has room to add to his frame, his ceiling may be what has DeBoer and company increasingly invested in his recruitment.

Caldwell's looming decision also speaks to a larger theme taking shape across Alabama's 2027 wide receiver board. With competition intensifying for top-tier targets like Simmons, along with four-star WR Osani Gayles, five-star WR Monshun Sales, among others, the Crimson Tide are no longer operating in a single-thread pursuit at the position. Instead, DeBoer and Nix are prioritizing versatility within their evaluations—identifying multiple targets who can be developed into impact pieces within the system.

And that sentiment appears to be resonating with Caldwell. “It’s a very well-run program where a lot of people get developed... They've definitely made it hard for me to choose now," Andrew Bone of BamaOnLine.

Ultimately, with Simmons trending to announce his commitment to Auburn on Tuesday, June 23, Caldwell's decision could arrive sooner than expected if he ultimately does choose Alabama. That outcome wouldn't just be a pivot addition to the Tide's 2027 recruiting class. Instead, it would signal Alabama's ability to absorb a recruiting miss and quickly secure a high-upside target the staff believes fits the system and raises the overall ceiling of the receiver board moving forward.
