It's not often a defense can allow 457 yards and still be outstanding. But Alabama was that against LSU. Even with Kalen DeBoer having to drag Kane Wommack off the field before the Tide's DC was penalized for over-exuberance, Wommack earned Alabama's most deserved tip of the hat.
Many Alabama fans hate 'bend don't break' defenses. We could not have been more wrong on Saturday. Wommack's Swarm defense delivered. The result was so startling and dispiriting for LSU fans that they left Tiger Stadium in droves well before Alabama's three kneel-downs to end the game.
Alabama Defensive Superlatives
- LSU's offense was an ineffective 5-for-14 on third downs. Lane Kiffin's obsession with going for it on fourth down was punished when Wommack's defense shut out the Bengal Tigers on four attempts.
- LSU reached the red zone four times and scored only one touchdown. Despite the shutout, Alabama is statistically one of the SEC's worst at allowing red zone touchdowns. Against the Bengal Tigers, the Crimson Tide was stellar.
- A major reason the Crimson Tide blew out LSU in the game's fourth quarter was that LSU's last four possessions ended in turnovers on downs.
- Alabama's four sacks of Sam Leavitt were essential, but if PFF is correct, the Crimson Tide's number of pressures was sensational. In addition to the sacks, PFF credited the Crimson Tide with 21 pressures. If that number is close to accurate, it is no wonder that Sam Leavitt finished with a 138.1 rating compared to Keelon Russell's 184.2.
- Perhaps a more pivotal stat for the Alabama defense is that it didn't let Sam Leavitt sustain many drives with his feet. Leavitt's sack-adjusted rushing yards were 45 yards on 11 carries. His longest run was eight yards.
- LSU passed for 380 yards, but it took 47 passes. Some of those yards came from missed tackles. PFF counted 17 Alabama missed tackles. No defense is perfect, and Alabama more than made up for its mistakes.
Kane Wommack has multiple good choices for players of the game, including Luke Metz, Terrance Green, Red Morgan, Devan Thompkins, Caleb Woodson, and even Chuck McDonald.
