With a 20-17 lead in the fourth quarter, Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb appeared poised to lean on his 5-foot-10, 221-pound senior running back Jam Miller to help close out the game. However, Miller, who began the season missing time with a broken collarbone, was knocked out of the game with what the ESPN broadcast speculated was a possible shoulder injury after taking a big hit.
Missouri safety Jalen Catalon delivered the hit on Miller that forced him to exit the game. The hit appeared to be near the head of Miller, but targeting was not called. Miller also looked to be favoring his shoulder on his way to the locker room.
The Tigers already lost veteran defensive back Marvin Burks Jr. to a targeting penalty in the first quarter on a hit that knocked true freshman wide receiver Derek Meadows from the game. Meadows was unable to return to the field in a game that Alabama began with just seven wide receivers, missing Jaylen Mbakwe and Jalen Hale. Ryan Williams has also been limited after appearing on the midweek injury report.
Miller took his first snaps of the season in Week 5 against Georgia, rushing for 46 yards on 16 attempts. Miller was better in Week 6 against Vanderbilt, becoming Alabama’s first 100-yard rusher since Jalen Milroe accomplished the feat in last season’s Iron Bowl win over Auburn. He finished the 30-14 win with 136 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts.
With over three-quarters of action on Saturday, Miller had racked up 85 yards on 20 carries. After his exit, Kevin Riley and Daniel Hill split snaps in the backfield, and Hill caught a touchdown pass from Ty Simpson to make the score 27-17 with 3:16 remaining.
Jam Miller latest injury update:
The senior running back exited Alabama’s Week 7 matchup at Missouri in the fourth quarter after taking a big hit on the sidelines and had to be helped to the locker room. Miller did not return on Alabama’s subsequent drive, with Simpson leading the offense down the field to extend the Crimson Tide’s lead to 10.
UPDATE: Kalen DeBoer confirmed postgame that both Miller and wide receiver Derek Meadows suffered concussions against Missouri. He did not provide a timeline for either to return as the Crimson Tide are scheduled to play Tennessee in Tuscaloosa next week.
