In a series that has been dominated by Tennessee it was Alabama that dominated in the second round of the SEC Tournament with a 76-64 win. The Tide started where they left off against Missouri scoring 25 points in the first quarter and never really looked back. For a majority of the game it was the Ta' Mia Scott and Jessica Timmons show. After a tough shooting night against Mizzou Timmons got back to her normal self scoring 23 points, and Scott continued her double digit scoring streak putting up 20 points.
The Vols did try to make it somewhat interesting, cutting the lead to 10 points with a little under four minutes left in the game, with Scott fouling out. But that was the closest they would get as Alabama got some big late baskets from Karly Weathers and Essence Cody to keep the lead from getting to single digits.
Weathers may not have had a big scoring night, but she contributed in other ways, as she always does, with seven assists. Anytime we can beat Tennessee, even when they are down, it is a big deal, especially being able to get revenge from the January regular-season matchup.
Now the Tide advance to the quarterfinals for the second time in three years, where they will once again have a chance at a little revenge when they face Texas Friday night. It will be the second matchup between these teams in less than a week, where the Longhorns came out on top 72-65 in Tuscaloosa.
It will take a special effort to knock off the Longhorns, but it feels like this Alabama team is trying to do something special in Greeneville. A third game in three days is always tough, but they are enjoying this run and would love to keep it going a little longer.
