Alabama's chances of hanging on to Kane Wommack just skyrocketed

The chatter around Kane Wommack potentially becoming the next head coach at Arkansas had risen significantly in recent days, particularly on Tuesday after Oklahoma State snatched North Texas' Eric Morris out of the candidate pool.

Some even considered Wommack the favorite for the Razorbacks job after that news broke. But on Wednesday, Arkansas reporter Trey Schaap reported via sources that South Florida's Alex Golesh had been offered - and accepted - the head coaching job:

Golseh was one of four reported finalists for the job, as reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel over the weekend. Wommack, Morris, and Memphis' Ryan Silverfield were the other three.

Wommack's excellent work with Alabama's defense - along with his previous head coaching experience and significant ties to Fayetteville - made some believe he had emerged as the leading candidate for the job. In the end, it appears the Hogs are going with one of the top young head coaches from the Group-of-Six ranks instead.

Alabama may not be completely out of the woods with Kane Wommack yet

Arkansas choosing Golseh is a significant step toward Kalen DeBoer being able to retain his defensive coordinator for a third season, but the Crimson Tide may not be out of the woods just yet. This coaching carousel is just now beginning to churn, and there will be more jobs opening up in the coming weeks as the moving and shaking gets started in earnest following the final weekend of the regular season.

Wommack has so far only been seriously linked to Arkansas, but that could change before too much longer. He was on the peripheries of the Oklahoma State search, too, but that didn't seem to really ever gain any traction.

Wommack left his job as a Group of Six head coach to become the Alabama defensive coordinator, so it seems likely that it would take a Power Four job to get him to jump ship. Some of the bigger jobs from smaller conferences - perhaps like South Florida - could be intriguing, however. That would still be a significant step up from where he was at South Alabama before.

This coaching carousel will continue being crazy, and DeBoer could be looking at a major staff overhaul. Co-OC/WR coach JaMarcus Shephard is reportedly one of two finalists for the head coaching job at Oregon State. OC Ryan Grubb is expected to generate interest from head coaching vacancies on the West Coast like Cal, UCLA, and perhaps Washington, if Jedd Fisch seeks out another job this cycle.

Arkansas going in a different direction is big for DeBoer to maintain some semblance of staff continuity with Wommack, though it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Tide's DC become a leading candidate for another vacancy.
