Alabama took care of business in the season-opener against East Carolina on Saturday, rolling to a 48-10 win in Bryant-Denny Stadium to kick off Kalen DeBoer's third season. There was plenty to work on, but also plenty to build upon in an opener that produced zero anxious moments.
Next week will almost certainly be different. And it appears that Vegas is banking on that.
Alabama travels to Kentucky next week for the SEC opener on the road. While the Wildcats are fresh off a 5-7 campaign in 2025, it's a new day in Lexington with a confident Will Stein in charge. Kentucky knocked off Youngstown State 45-13 in its opener to come into next week's matchup with a 1-0 record as well.
Oddsmakers expect Kentucky to put up a significant fight at home against Alabama.
Per FanDuel, as of 12 am ET, Alabama is just an 8.5-point favorite on the road next week.
Alabama opens as just over a touchdown favorite against Kentucky in Week 2
Winning on the road isn't easy. It's especially not easy in the SEC. Kentucky will be ready for a fight, and Stein will hope to grab a marquee early victory in his Wildcats tenure to show immediate proof of concept.
Alabama will have to play better in Week 2 than it did in Week 1 to go on the road and knock off Kentucky. There will be anxious moments in next week's game.
Oddsmakers still like Alabama to win, but they're hedging their bets early on. It'll be Keelon Russell's first road snaps of his college career, and Kentucky will throw the kitchen sink at him. Alabama's offense wasn't exactly smooth against ECU. There were pre-snap errors, misreads, drops, and more. DeBoer will need a smoother operation next week. Kentucky has enough talent to make Alabama pay for those errors, especially at home.
But there were plenty of positive takeaways, too. Alabama ran the ball effectively, the offensive line mostly held up, and Kane Wommack's defense looked as good as advertised, save for one coverage bust.
Next week will be a real test, though. If Alabama is going to be a playoff team, it's a game it cannot afford to lose early in the season. With a treacherous slate beginning in October, it's always been imperative that the Crimson Tide gets off to a fast start.
While Vegas is still confident in Alabama coming out on top, the opening odds make it look like more of a dogfight than fans might be hoping for.
