Alabama's new-look offensive line may have found the right formula for 2026

Alabama opens fall camp today with plenty of questions to answer. 

The quarterback battle between Keelon Russell and Austin Mack will dominate the headlines. The competition at linebacker, running back, and the rotation along the defensive line will be worth monitoring as well, but perhaps no position group carries more importance to Alabama's 2026 season than the offensive line.

The Crimson Tide spent much of the 2025 season searching for consistency up front. Now, with fall camp underway, the Tide enter a new era along the offensive line under first-year offensive line coach Adrian Klemm. And based on the pounds gained and shed from spring practices to August by the potential starting five, the group appears to be trending in a different direction — one that could place a greater emphasis on athleticism without sacrificing size.

That potential lineup would give Alabama a combined weight of 1,593 pounds and an average of 318.6 pounds per starter along its offensive front entering 2026. 

This positional weight loss opens eyes when comparing the group DeBoer and ex-Tide offensive line coach Chris Kapolivic trotted out last fall: Kadyn Proctor (336lbs), Kam Dewberry (322lbs), Parker Brailsford (290lbs), Jaeden Roberts (327lbs), and Wilkin Formby (324lbs). The unit weighed a combined 1,629 pounds, averaging 327.8 pounds per starter.

The math comes out to roughly 9.2 pounds lighter per lineman, equaling a total of 36 pounds less across the board.

The contrast matters for a position group that struggled to consistently get off the ball, pull, and reach the second level effectively enough to generate movement in space. The trend also holds weight when looking back at the type of personnel DeBoer and Grubb had up front during their final season together at Washington in 2023 — a Joe Moore Award-winning line that didn't overpower opposing defensive fronts on a weekly basis, but instead used their collection of size, athleticism, and finesse to help spearhead the Huskies' run to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

That said, it's not to suggest the Tide's new look is suddenly on a similar trajectory to earn that kind of hardware, nor does it guarantee Klemm's group will find success in Year 1. But it does speak to the type of foundation Alabama is working towards entering fall camp: a unit built with the potential to flip a weakness into a strength.

And if that development comes to fruition, it could create a positive ripple effect throughout DeBoer and Grubb's offense — most notably i how effective Alabama is able to run the football in 2026.
