What a Week 7 it was in college football, and how sobering it was for Alabama and Georgia fans. At least the Crimson Tide lost to a good team. Georgia didn't, but could have won. Alabama was never in the game against the Vols.
Let's skip a review of my Week 7 SEC Power Rankings. They are irrelevant. This week, let's review the rankings from four sources. They are: FanSided's Chris Landers, Vols Wire, UGA Wire, and my friend Matt Melton at Roll TideWire.
I'm skipping a ranking this week. I would only be guessing at half of the SEC's teams.
Where is Alabama and who is the SEC's No. 1 team?
Alabama's Week 8 rankings have a narrow range. The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 5 by two sites, No. 6 by one, and No. 7 by the Tennessee site.
There is no consensus about the SEC's No. 1 team. The UGA site ranked Ole Miss No. 1. FanSided ranked Georgia No. 1. Vols Wire has Georgia No. 1, and Roll Tide Wire has Ole Miss No. 1.
Solely for providing a tie-breaker, my pick is Georgia at No. 1.
Rankings for the Texas Longhorns are wildly different. Steve Sarkisian's team is ranked No. 3, No. 5, No. 9, and No. 11. The Longhorns are one of the teams I have no idea where to rank.
Every source cited ranked the Tennessee Vols higher than Alabama. Three sources ranked Tennessee No. 3, and one ranked UT No. 4. If this were a verbal exchange, I'd have to grit my teeth to say it, but Tennessee deserves to be ranked above Alabama.
Apparently, down on The Plains, the Aubies are celebrating to the level of a Super Bowl win. But the Tigers didn't exactly zoom up the SEC Power Rankings. One source ranked Auburn No. 6. The other three ranked the Tigers No. 9, No. 10, and No.10.
What about Alabama's next week opponent, the Texas A&M Aggies? Mike Elko's team has its highest ranking at No. 13, with three other rankings at No. 14. That's another team I don't know how to rank. However, my early week hunch is that Alabama will make them look better than the current rankings.
