Alabama star DL LT Overton was in the midst of the breakout performance Crimson Tide fans were waiting for against Wisconsin. He got an early sack in the first quarter and was generating plenty of pressure on Badgers QB Danny O'Neil. Unfortunately, Overton left the game with an injury in the third quarter.
Overton went down with what appeared to be a lower-body injury in the third quarter. After limping off the field, he briefly returned to the game on the next series, but then was seen walking with an athletic trainer into the locker room.
There's been no official update from the team yet, but with a big lead in the fourth quarter, there's certainly no reason to risk his return even if the injury is relatively minor.
Alabama getting a bye week at a perfect time with mounting injury concerns
Alabama's defensive line remains beaten up. Alabama has already been without starting nose tackle Tim Keenan for the first three games of the season. Keenan suffered a high-ankle sprain in practice ahead of the Tide's season opener against Florida State. One week later, Keenan's backup, Jeremiah Beaman, suffered a torn ACL in practice that knocked him out for the season.
Now, Overton, arguably the team's top defensive lineman, goes down with an injury in Week 3 against Wisconsin.
Alabama has had no choice but to develop some depth on the defensive line with these injuries.
The good news is that Alabama has a bye week coming up next week, which comes at a perfect time before a road trip to Athens to face Georgia the following week. Alabama will need all the time it can get to get healthy.
Along with the injuries to the defensive line, LB Jah-Marien Latham has missed the last couple of games with an injury. Alabama has also been without star RB Jam Miller through the first three weeks.
Hopefully, Overton's injury is minor, and he is being held out for an abundance of caution.
