Losing key veterans at linebacker in the heart of Alabama's defense from last season has left a feeling of growing uncertainty, similar to a company suddenly losing its most experienced managers. Into that gap steps Caleb Woodson, a senior transfer 'backer from Virginia Tech whose presence is already feeling like more than just talent — it's also leadership.
The kind of leadership Kalen DeBoer and Tide defensive coordinator crave this spring after losing their three most productive tackling machines and best communicators in senior linebackers Deontae Lawson, Justin Jefferson, and Nikhai Green-Hill. Many expect that loss to hit pivotally if Wommack doesn't fill it correctly after watching the trio combine for 234 total tackles and 16 tackles for loss in 2025. Fortunately, for the Crimson Tide's defense, they're getting an experienced player in Woodson, who comes to Tuscaloosa after racking up 151 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, and 3 pass breakups during his three-year run in the ACC for the Hokies as a previous team captain.Â
This production and status are why DeBoer and Wommack come into this spring feeling more confident than most on the outside looking in, especially after seeing how he's attacked workouts this offense and through the early goings of spring practices. The third-year Alabama head coach made this apparent when speaking glowingly of Woodson's impact thus far to reporters on Tuesday.
Kalen DeBoer said of Woodson, "Bringing in Caleb as a captain-type guy. His leadership coming in has been certainly noted and appreciated."
That early assessment by DeBoer regarding Woodson should feel refreshing to Alabama when considering the youth to experience imbalance within this year's roster. Woodson is one of the handful of seniors within the locker room. The Haymarket, Virginia native's skillset and presence alone should stabilize things for Wommack and Woodson's teammates as Alabama looks to reconstruct things at the second level through the 6-foot-2, 238-pounder's toolbox.Â
Now, if Woodson continues to see the tone, like many believe he can, then his game and aura should help DeBoer and company better offset their losses to help further shape the identity of Alabama's defense in 2026.Â
