4-star ATH Roman Voss, who projects as a tight end at the next level, announced his commitment to home-state Minnesota on Monday, choosing the Gophers over Alabama. The Crimson Tide made a nice push for the talented athlete from Jackson, Minnesota, but in the end, the allure of staying at home was too much to ignore.

Voss is ranked as the top player in the state of Minnesota and becomes the crown jewel of the Gophers' recruiting class. He was a coveted prospect by many, holding offers from Miami (FL), Wisconsin, USC, Oklahoma, and Auburn, among others.
In May, Voss cut his list down to Alabama and Minnesota, announcing that if he was going to leave his home state, it would be for Tuscaloosa. Alabama hosted Voss for an official visit earlier this month, and seemingly made a strong impression.
In the end, however, you can't fault a kid for staying at home. Alabama has plenty of other options at TE, however, and will now turn their full attention to their top target at the position, who will announce his commitment on Thursday:
4-star TE Mack Sutter remains Alabama's top target at TE in the 2026 class
Alabama would have gladly taken two tight ends in this class with Voss joining Dunlap, Illinois native Mack Sutter. The Tide still may take two, with two currently on the roster entering their final season of eligibility (Josh Cuevas and Troy transfer Brody Dalton).
But for Kalen DeBoer and company, their top target throughout the process at tight end has been Sutter. He is a consensus 4-star recruit and is rated as the No. 80 overall prospect in the country, per the 247 composite.
Sutter was in Tuscaloosa over the weekend for his official visit, and less than two weeks ago, he announced a final four of Alabama, Illinois, Ohio State, and Ole Miss.
Most pundits see his recruitment as a two-horse race between Alabama and his home-state Illini. Contrary to Voss, Sutter seems ready to leave home.
Sutter will announce his commitment on Thursday, the same day as another top Alabama target (RB Ezavier Crowell). As things stand, On3's RPM favors the Crimson Tide over Illinois in his recruitment. Getting the pivotal last visit and pitching him as a top priority was key for DeBoer and his potential position coach in Tuscaloosa, Bryan Ellis.
It is certainly possible the pull of staying at home becomes too much for him to overcome, but as things stand three days ahead of his recruitment, Alabama is in a good spot.
