Kalen DeBoer doesn't need Alabama to simply win games in 2026. He needs the Crimson Tide to win the right games.
That's the challenge waiting for Alabama as it opens fall camp this week.
ESPN recently ranked the Crimson Tide No.17 among 31 teams with a legitimate chance to make the College Football Playoff, giving Alabama a 41.3% chance to reach the field. Included in these rankings where fellow SEC counterparts, Texas (1), Georgia (5), Ole Miss (8), Texas A&M (9), and LSU (10).
Despite Alabama being listed as the 6th placed in the conference, these rankings represent the growing national expectations surrounding DeBoer's program heading into his third season. But buried within ESPN's assessment was a warning that could ultimately define Alabama's season:
A lack of statement wins.

“Bama might not face a ranked opponent until Oct.10 against Georgia, and there's no guarantee that the majority of teams in the back half of the schedule will finish in the CFP top 25… If Alabama has a similar season to last year — without any statement wins — the committee probably won't be as forgiving,” ESPN senior college football reporter Heather Dinich wrote.
That distinction matters heading into 2026.
Alabama put together four consecutive wins against teams ranked at the time last fall when knocking off Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Tennessee. Those victories gave the committee enough quality wins to look past some of the flaws on Alabama’s resume.
The Crimson Tide still earned a CFP berth despite three losses, including an ugly defeat to a 5-7 Florida State team and a 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game. But Alabama can't assume the committee will overlook those types of blemishes again.
The problem isn't necessarily a lack of difficult games on the Tide’s 2026 schedule, having the No.15 hardest schedule in all of college football coming into August. It's a lack of guaranteed resume-building opportunities.
Georgia stands out as the obvious one.
When the Bulldogs come to Tuscaloosa on Oct.10, Alabama will have its first major opportunity to make a statement. A win would immediately give the Tide the type of resume-defining victory ESPN believes could be missing this season.
Texas A&M and LSU could provide two more opportunities later in the year. But there's no guarantee either team will finish highly enough in the rankings for those wins to carry the same weight. The same goes for Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
All four could be competitive, but Alabama has no control over whether those teams turn into ranked opponents. If Alabama suffers another two-or three-loss season, it may not have the same collection of quality wins available to repair its resume.
That's where the margin for error becomes so important.
Alabama doesn't necessarily need to go undefeated to ensure itself a seat at the postseason table. But if the Tide stumble, they need to have enough impressive wins to give the committee a reason to look past those losses.
So the message entering fall camp is simple: Don’t just win games — win the right games.
Because Alabama got the CFP committee to look past its flaws once. DeBoer can't count on the same forgiveness twice.
