On multiple levels, the Alabama Football loss to Oklahoma feels worse than it was. Even at home, losing by two points to a ranked team is far from a disaster. Oklahoma's defensive game plan and execution should be lauded, but it frustrates Alabama fans that the Crimson Tide contributed to its defeat.

Most troubling to Alabama football fans is that the game created a serious level of doubt about the Crimson Tide. Kane Wommack's defense was outstanding. But Kalen DeBoer's and Ryan Grubb's offense was the opposite. The question that must now be asked is whether Alabama's offense is good enough for any Playoff success.

When Brian Fremeau's opponent-adjusted efficiency ratings (OFEI) are updated, it will be interesting to see if the Tide's offensive efficiency drops. Before the OU game, Alabama was No. 9 nationally in OFEI and No. 17 when not adjusted for opponent strength. The ESPN FPI's current offensive efficiency rankings have Alabama at No. 13, just sixth-best among SEC teams.

Most predictions for the next CFB Playoff rankings have Alabama in the No. 8 to No. 10 range. Two of the three slots would mean a Playoff road game for the Crimson Tide. Starting the playoffs in South Bend, Eugene, or Norman brings shudders to many Alabama fans. The probability of advancing to the quarterfinals (and hopefully beyond) would improve with the Crimson Tide hosting a first round game.

A Vanderbilt WIn Aids Alabama Football

Alabama fans agreeing with the above should root for the Vanderbilt Commodores against Kentucky. Thanks to the handy calculator provided by mred, we know that Alabama needs the Dores to win another SEC game. They have two chances, the Wildcats and the Vols. A Vandy win, in either game, would give Iron Bowl winner, Alabama, a tie-breaker win over Georgia and Ole Miss.

Advancing to Atlanta will not ensure a playoff home game. A third loss would not knock the Crimson Tide out of the playoff. It would mean a road game. Winning in Atlanta could mean that Alabama earns a first-round bye.

On Saturday while Alabama vents some frustration on Eastern Illinois, some fan attention can also be given to the game in Nashville. Cast aside any negative feelings about Diego Pavia and root for the Commodores.
