In some ways, no buzz about the Alabama Crimson Tide might be the best situation. Cody Nagle, writing for CBS Sports, recently discussed college football's top teams with "positive momentum." Nagle did not include the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Number one for Nagle with the loudest buzz is the LSU Bengal Tigers: "The Lane Train has been college football's loudest story ... LSU has embraced every bit of the attention that comes with it. But for as much as Kiffin enjoys being at the center of the conversation, he's backed up the hype with arguably the most impressive roster rebuild of the offseason."
Nagle's other teams with college football's sizzling buzz are (in order): Texas, Notre Dame, USC, Indiana, Miami, Florida, Ole Miss, Oregon, and Virginia Tech.
Nagle is spot on, stating that Steve Sarkisian apparently believes that the Longhorns' roster is his best Texas roster yet. There is justification for the optimism about the other eight teams included in Nagle's most buzzed-about list.
To his credit, Nagle also reminds that "offseason momentum doesn't always translate into fall success." Alabama Crimson Tide fans might find comfort in that message. The reason why some comfort is needed is that so much offseason buzz about Alabama has been either doubting or unapologetically negative.
ESPN's Chris Low has long been a sound source of unbiased opinion. Low somehow does not let being a Tennessee grad cloud his vision. Low recently published his SEC Power Rankings, and the Crimson Tide was No. 7. Alabama's schedule has three games against teams Low ranked higher: Georgia at No. 2, Texas A&M at No. 5, and LSU at No. 6.
Alabama Crimson Tide Doubts
A solid source projecting the Crimson Tide as the SEC's seventh-best team is troubling for most Alabama fans. At the same time, many Alabama fans recognize the Crimson Tide has too many question marks to warrant being ranked much higher.
A best-case scenario from Low's rankings is that they will motivate the Alabama roster to do the work necessary to prove the rankings wrong. Hopefully, that will be a lasting resolve that does not carry a catchy slogan like proving naysayers wrong.
