A quick clarification is necessary that the 'Jamo' in this post's title does not refer to former Alabama Crimson Tide player Jameson Williams. It is used as a moniker for former Penn State head coach James Franklin. I am unaware of Frankin ever being called 'Jamo' before now. It fits for the former SEC coach because his Nittany Lions teams have frequently been jammed when playing ranked teams.
Franklin is best known as the Power Four head coach who 'can't win big games.' In his last four-plus seasons at Penn State, Franklin's Nittany Lions teams were 6-14 against ranked teams. In the same period, Penn State was 0-3 against Michigan and 0-5 against Ohio State. In Franklin's 11 full Penn State seasons, his record against the Ohio State Buckeyes was 1-11.
Given Frankin's consistent failures against Penn State rivals, it is fair to assume future Iron Bowls would be a disaster for Auburn. Other top SEC programs would likely feast on Jamo as well.
Another top target for Auburn is Jimbo Fisher. Fisher is a record-setting coach. He was paid the highest buyout ever, $76M and change, to not coach the Texas A&M Aggies. That amount is certainly a record. Jimbo is a National Championship-winning coach. In 2013, Fisher's Florida State team was outstanding, edging Auburn 34-31 in the BCS Championship Game. That may be one of the seasons that Auburn claims it was the national champion. If they hire Jimbo, he will probably demand that they relinquish the claim.
UPDATE: I checked and Auburn does not claim a 2013 national championship. The Tigers do claim 2004, when they did not win the national championship, but Tommy Tuberville gave his team national championship rings.
A win over the Alabama Crimson Tide
With money to burn in College Station, Fisher won only 64.3% of his games during six seasons as the Aggies' Head Coach. He does meet one of Auburn's top resume requirements. His 2021 team beat then-ranked No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide 41-38.
Fisher spent six seasons at Auburn as a quarterback assistant coach in the 1990s. He was Saban's LSU staff as QB coach and Offensive Coordinator. It has been reported that after Saban left the Miami Dolphins, Fisher declined to join him in Tuscaloosa. To the extent Fisher was ever an offensive wizard, those days are long past. Now he is closer to being a 'has-been', who was seldom anything close to being elite.
I think Auburn should improve under its next head coach. I also think Jimbo and Jamo will lower the ceiling on that improvement. For the record, I was wrong about Hugh Freeze. When he was hired, I predicted he would fail at Auburn. I did not envision his tenure being the disaster it became. Maybe I am wrong (in a different direction) about Franklin and Fisher.
