CBS links popular Alabama football assistant with multiple head coaching vacancies

Could Alabama lose one of its most popular assistants, who also happens to be an ace recruiter and talent developer?

It's going to be a wild coaching carousel.

With so many high-profile vacancies at programs like LSU, Florida, Penn State, and Auburn, among others - with more expected to open in the coming weeks - there's going to be quite a bit of shuffling on coaching staffs across the country.

Alabama coordinators Ryan Grubb and Kane Wommack could be candidates for multiple jobs. Wommack, in particular, has done excellent work with the Crimson Tide's defense over the last month and could be in line for the Power Four job he has long coveted.

Grubb's name has cooled a bit in recent weeks with the Tide's offensive struggles, but it may not stay that way.

The carousel is crazy enough, however, that Alabama could end up losing one of its most coveted position coaches to a head coaching position.

WR coach and co-Offensive Coordinator JaMarcus Shephard is regarded as one of the top recruiters and WR coaches in college football. He's done excellent work increasing the talent level in the Tide's WR room, and he's a young coach whose star is steadily on the rise.

In fact, he could jump straight from WR coach to head coach without being a play-caller.

CBS recently wrote an update on the coaching carousel with insiders Chris Hummer, John Talty, and Matt Zenitz contributing. While the main discussion centers around Lane Kiffin and the major job openings, Shephard is linked to two head coaching vacancies near the bottom of the article.

CBS links Alabama WR coach JaMarcus Shephard to Oregon State and Colorado State

Shephard is one of three names CBS linked to Oregon State, joined by former Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst and Montana State head coach Brent Vigen. If the Beavers prioritize head coaching experience, then Shephard will have a hard time beating out either of the other two listed candidates.

But the Alabama WR coach is also mentioned as a potential candidate for the Colorado State head coaching job. He could be competing for the job with Washington OC Jimmie Dougherty, Georgia DB coach Donte Williams, and former Auburn head coach and current OC at Cal Bryan Harsin.

Shephard was linked during last season's coaching carousel with the open Washington State head coaching job. The Cougars ultimately hired South Dakota State head coach Jimmy Rogers instead.

It seems like only a matter of time before Shephard makes a leap to either a full-time play caller or a head coach. Kalen DeBoer hopes he can hang on to his ace recruiter and elite WR coach for at least one more coaching cycle.
