ESPN expert sounds the alarm on Germie Bernard's rookie season with Aaron Rodgers

From the outside looking in, Germie Bernard securing a Hall-of-Fame QB for his rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers sounds like a good thing.

On Saturday, Aaron Rodgers agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $25 million to return to the Steelers for a second season. That gives clarity to an uncertain QB situation in Pittsburgh.

The Steelers retooled their WR group this offseason by acquiring Michael Pittman Jr. in a trade with the Colts and drafting Bernard in the 2nd Round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Rodgers has famously struggled to find chemistry with new receivers, however, a fact that ESPN's Ben Solak was quick to point out in his column about Rodgers' return to Pittsburgh.

"Rodgers famously struggles with new faces at receiver," Solak writes. "They don't know his signals and predilections. No matter the scheme run for Rodgers, he will expect his receivers to change their routes to his exact expectations. It is challenging to be a pass catcher for him."

Germie Bernard could struggle to get up to speed with Aaron Rodgers as a rookie

The good news for Bernard is that he's used to having to work with a brand new QB.

He went through that in both of his seasons at Alabama and managed to thrive. When he transferred from Washington to Alabama, he had to get familiar with Jalen Milroe as the QB. Bernard got off to a slow-ish start, but became the Crimson Tide's most consistent receiver in 2024 with 794 yards and two touchdowns.

After Milroe left for the draft, Bernard had to get familiar with Ty Simpson in 2025. It didn't take long, with Bernard having a monster debut against Florida State and finishing as the Crimson Tide's leading receiver with 862 yards and seven touchdowns.

But this will be different. Neither Milroe nor Simpson is as difficult to please and get along with as Rodgers has famously proven to be.

But also, Bernard seems like the perfect possession-type receiver for Rodgers. If they can develop a quick rapport, and that's a big if, depending on how much Rodgers participates in OTAs leading up to the preseason, then Bernard could be in for a strong rookie season that puts him among the leading first-year receivers in the NFL.

If not, Bernard's rookie season could be difficult. In any case, he'll probably only have one season of it. This is most likely Rodgers' final NFL season, meaning Bernard will have to develop a rapport with yet another QB in 2027.
