After a weekend spent rolling out the red carpet during Alabama’s first round of official visits, Kalen DeBoer and his coaching staff could soon add one of the nation's premier defensive backs to the Crimson Tide’s growing collection of elite talent in their 2027 recruiting class.
Bishop Gorman five-star cornerback Hayden Stepp remains one of the Tide’s top targets heading into the summer. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Las Vegas native recorded 16 solo tackles, 24 total tackles, four pass deflections, one interception, and one fumble recovery in nine games during the 2025-26 season. Stepp ranks as the No. 29 overall player per 247Sports in the 2027 cycle, and recent intel from ESPN’s recruiting analyst Eli Lederman provides two significant reasons for optimism regarding Alabama’s chances.
ESPN list 2 factors why Alabama could potentially have the inside track to land 2027 5-Star CB Hayden Stepp
“A childhood Crimson Tide fan, Stepp took his visit to Alabama this past weekend and will make stops at Cal, Georgia, and Oregon later this month,” Lederman wrote. “ESPN’s No. 3 Cornerback has forged a close relationship with Alabama defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist and could be the next piece in the program’s recent run of early impact defensive back additions.”

The first reason for optimism is Stepp’s longstanding connection with the Crimson Tide. While childhood alliances don't always determine a recruit’s final destination, they can provide a valuable edge in a highly competitive recruitment involving some of college football’s premier programs. The second—and perhaps more important—factor is the rapport Stepp has with Coach Mo, being widely regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters and developers at the position.
Linguist has already quickly become a key figure in Alabama’s efforts to successfully land elite secondary talent in past cycles, such as Zabien Brown, Dijon Lee, Ivan Taylor, Chuck McDonald, Jorden Edmounds, Jireh Edwards, and others. As a result, his connection with Stepp appears to be paying dividends. When paired with Alabama’s long track record of developing NFL-caliber defensive backs and giving young players opportunities to make an immediate impact, those two factors help explain why the Crimson Tide continues to be viewed as a serious contender for Stepp’s talents as Alabama looks to bolster a 2027 recruiting class expected to be built on quality-over-quantity.
With that in mind, it'll be interesting to see where Alabama sits in Stepp’s recruitment later this month after he takes his official visits to Oregon (June 12-14) , Cal (June 15-17), and Georgia (June 19-21).
