As successful as the Alabama softball team has been, and the recent wins in the portal for both the men's and women's basketball teams have seen, arguably the biggest win of the weekend came from former athlete and alumnus Isaac Odugbessen, better known in the wrestling world as Oba Femi.
In the first WrestleMania match of his young career, he dominated wrestling legend Brock Lesnar in almost a squash-like fashion, which really set wrestling fans abuzz with how Femi dominated, but also right after Lesnar announced his retirement in the ring. Oba Femi has become a household name in the WWE as one of the most popular people on the roster, but before his wrestling career, he was an All-American Track and Field athlete for the Tide.
He transferred to Alabama after his freshman year at Middle Tennessee State, and he dominated, winning three SEC shot put championships.
Femi has an imposing physique, standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 310 lbs. Looking at him, even when he was in Tuscaloosa, you would have thought he was a football player, and even Nick Saban has joked that he missed the boat by not trying to get him onto the football field. Of course, the football field is where most of Alabama's former athletes go pro and have long, successful careers, and now Oba Femi has joined the ranks of former Tide athletes who have found success, though in a little different pro sport.
Sure, pro wrestling is not real, and the results are determined beforehand, but you have to be an incredible athlete to be successful and to be a fan favorite. After Femi's huge Wrestlemania victory, the amount of television time this man gets every week on Monday Night Raw or Friday Night SmackDown may put him up there as one of the most well-known Alabama alumni. The wrestling world is deep and full of fans, and with the trajectory of where Oba Femi's career is headed, he is going to be a long-time star in the WWE. It is cool to have a former Alabama athlete and alumnus to cheer for while watching wrestling.
