The Alabama defense could be much improved in 2025, and not come close to allowing 7.1 points per game. The game has evolved so much offensively, defense is no longer considered by many as the primary key to winning championships. That does not mean trying to win a championship without a strong defense is a sound plan.

Alabama was not good enough defensively last season, and major reasons why were inconsistent offensive performances. In the loss to Oklahoma, Alabama had three interceptions, converted 7-of-15 third downs and 0-of-1 fourth downs. Along with not producing any touchdowns, the offensive weaknesses led to 8.5 more minutes of possession by the Sooners. The Michigan game was worse. The Wolverines' offense was on the field almost 16.5 minutes longer than Alabama. The Crimson Tide offense was 4-of-13 on third down and 0-for-3 on fourth downs.

Four Reasons 2025 Alabama Football Defense will improve

  • 2025 is the second season for the Crimson Tide DC Kane Wommack. Wommack believes his '25 roster has more players who "understand" his brand of football and "how it is supposed to be played." Much of the 2024 season was spent on teaching a new defense. It is anticipated that the 2025 defense will understand pre-snap assignments better, allowing them to react more quickly as plays progress.
  • One of the reasons the above improvement will occur is that Kane Wommack will have the luxury of experienced depth in every position group. There are no weak link position groups. Perhaps the most improved unit will be the Crimson Tide secondary. Wommack is confident he has the roster talent to use many 'best 11' options for situational substitution.
