The CFB Playoff dilemma that no committee can resolve affects more than the Alabama Crimson Tide. Despite its sincere and concerted efforts, the committee's dilemma is that it can't accurately rank teams.
The committee is not alone. Take one example from the AP Poll. Until this week, the Tennessee Vols have been ranked in every AP Poll Top 25, despite Tennessee not having beaten a single ranked team. Worse is that not a single one of Tennessee's eight wins was over a team with a winning record. Even with those facts, Tennessee, at 8-4, is currently ranked No. 24 in the Coaches Poll.
Another example is James Madison. The Dukes are 11-1, having lost by two touchdowns to unranked 8-4 Louisville. The Dukes' win resume is Weber State, Liberty, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana, Old Dominion, Texas State, Marshall, App State, Washington State, and Coastal Carolina. Only one of those teams has a winning record.
The selection of playoff teams is so insane that James Madison has a better chance of making the Playoff field than the Miami Hurricanes and the Vanderbilt Commodores. So do the North Texas Mean Green.
Supposedly, the playoff selection system is about fairness. What fairness means in playoff terms is that teams worthy of selection are not chosen to make room for lesser teams.
The Playoff Selection Committee Mess
The playoff selection process could be called a charade. Charitably, let's call it a mess. A mess that could end this season's Alabama Crimson Tide playoff expectations if Georgia beats Alabama on Saturday.
Alabama football fans would view such a result as calamitous, but there could well be an even worse calamity. If the loser of an SEC Championship Game is excluded from a Playoff, there may never be another SEC Championship Game. Not only would Greg Sankey take action, but in the future, no SEC football playoff contender would be willing to put itself at such risk. The spiral of how it all would get resolved is impossible to predict, but the guilty party would be the Playoff Selection Committee.
