It is time for Nick Sheridan to come down to the sideline on Saturday
After the recent struggles on the offensive side of the ball the last two weeks it is time for Nick Sheridan to come down to the sideline on Saturday.
There were times in the past when I thought previous Offensive Coordinator Bill O'Brien should have done the same. Sitting in the booth doesn't allow the offensive coordinator to get a feeling for what is going on with the players on the sideline.
Obviously sitting in the booth hasn't helped much with the offensive plan, so at this point it makes perfect sense for him to be on the sideline constantly talking to players, Jalen Milroe especially.
When Jalen was sitting on the sideline by himself dejected on the sideline last Saturday in Knoxville it would have been the perfect time for Sheridan to sit next to Jalen on that bench and talk to him.
Conversations mean more eye to eye rather than what is conveyed via headset especially when things aren't going right. Knowing where your quarterback is mentally should help how you call the game and calling the right plays should rebuild the quarterback's confidence.
Also, standing on the sideline you get a better feeling about the wide receivers and running backs. It is much easier to talk with them in person than conveying a message to someone on the sideline through the headset.
Players are naturally going to respond better to their offensive coordinator in person and I think it helps the offensive coordinator pick the plays better. Reading the sideline should give any offensive coordinator an advantage of knowing what is going to work and give his unit the best chance of scoring at the end of drives.
The offense has been mediocre at best the last two weeks especially, so obviously a change is needed. The energy needs to change within the offense and having Nick Sheridan coming down from the booth to the sideline is a great start.
