Where you land matters. After the initial shock of the Los Angeles Rams taking Ty Simpson No. 13 overall out of Alabama in the 2026 NFL Draft, it is starting to look more and more like the perfect situation for him. Simpson gets to back up Matthew Stafford and play for Sean McVay. His former head coach Kalen DeBoer also shared another upside to this pick nobody seems to have realized yet.
Here is what DeBoer had to say about Simpson on a recent trip to Huntsville for an alumni meeting.
"Well, that's one of the things Ty's extremely excited about. Getting a chance to be there with Coach McVay in LA, learn that system, be a part of the offense, being indoors... I just think there's a lot of things that as a quarterback you really love."
The fact Simpson gets to play half of his games indoors should allow for him to get the most out of his talent at the next level. While some weather does get into SoFi Stadium, based on the unique nature of how it is built, Simpson being able to play in more advantageous conditions than if he were to go to either San Francisco or Seattle in-division totally helps. All quarterbacks want to play inside.
With there being some questions about his frame and hand size, playing inside is a boon to Simpson.
Ty Simpson can use playing indoors to his advantage with the LA Rams
While Rams fans everywhere are elated to have him on their team, Simpson has to grow and learn under Stafford within the context of McVay's system. It is a quarterback-friendly one, but one that has evolved over the last several years. It is not the same one that Jared Goff saved his flailing NFL career in nearly a decade ago. Stafford is a different player than him, as is Simpson. What does this all mean?
Seemingly, every box that needed to be checked for Simpson to go to a perfect situation has been met and more with the Rams. Whether it be McVay, Stafford, or even playing mostly inside, it all keeps adding up to him potentially getting the most out of his talent in Los Angeles. Of course, Simpson will have to put in the work like he did for years at Alabama. He knows how to bide his time from college...
Overall, Simpson is so far better off going to the Rams over the Arizona Cardinals, the Cleveland Browns, or the New York Jets, all things equal. He went to a winning organization, one where he is not being asked to start right away. Simpson being eligible for a fifth-year option down the line as a first-round pick could make this pick even sweeter. If he is going to succeed in the NFL, it will be with LA.
Had Simpson gone to the Pittsburgh Steelers a few picks later, his hands could have been a concern.
