Kalen DeBoer is the king of coach-speak. You don't typically glean real information from listening to his interviews or asking him questions. He beats around the bush and sidesteps questions he doesn't want to give answers to. He's always pretty guarded.

That's what makes his comment to Chris Low in a recent interview on On3 about Alabama's Transfer Portal class so surprising. He was surprisingly candid in the interview.

DeBoer clearly doesn't believe the Crimson Tide's portal haul gets enough praise. In fact, most experts have questioned whether Alabama did enough in the portal to make up for what they lost. DeBoer clearly disagrees with that.

DeBoer believes that Alabama didn't overpay in the portal, but found a lot of bang for their buck:

"A lot of the guys we added are better than what we had, and we got them for a lot less money," DeBoer said.

Kalen DeBoer believes Alabama upgraded in the Transfer Portal

It has felt like Alabama's portal class hasn't gotten the praise it deserves. There are quite a few quality players in there, and it was obvious that DeBoer and GM Courtney Morgan had a clear vision in the Transfer Portal this offseason.

They were no longer willing to overpay on potential. Gone were the likes of Jaylen Mbakwe, James Smith, Qua Russaw, and Keon Keeley, replaced by either more productive players at their positions or guys who weren't asking for the moon despite not producing much of note on the actual field.

Alabama's defensive line could take a big step forward thanks to the addition of Big Ten transfers Devan Thompkins and Terrence Green. South Carolina transfer Desmond Umeozulu could be more productive next season than Russaw ever was.

For better or worse, Alabama fans will have to trust the evaluation ability of this staff. They've proven to do a good job of that with high school recruiting. They've identified high-end talent early, offering and pushing for those players before many others.

Keelon Russell is probably the best example of that, with Alabama jumping on him before he blew up to become the No. 2 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class. 4-star DT Nolan Wilson from the 2026 class is another good example; Alabama was Wilson's first offer, and that early relationship allowed the Crimson Tide to land him despite a furious push from others.

Heading into year three, Alabama's roster is now firmly built in DeBoer's image. If he's going to fail, he's going to fail with his guys. He's betting on himself, and considering his track record as a head coach, that's a pretty safe bet.
