Alabama didn't just lose to Florida State on Saturday; they got embarrassed. Worse, they got banged up in the process.
The biggest of the injuries came in the second half when star wide receiver Ryan Williams was knocked out of the game with a concussion. The sophomore was having a difficult game up to that point, with three drops and only five receptions for 30 yards, and now his status is very much in doubt heading into next weekend's matchup against Louisiana Monroe.
According to DeBoer, Williams will go through concussion protocol, and it's not yet known how quickly that process will go. Head injuries are tricky, and everyone bounces back from them at a different pace. OG Jaeden Roberts went through protocol recently, and it was a few weeks before he was cleared to return. Roberts, despite being cleared, still didn't play against the Seminoles.
At this point, it seems unlikely that Williams will be available for this Saturday.
Kalen DeBoer updates the plethora of other Alabama injuries
Along with Williams, Alabama is dealing with plenty of other injuries. Jam Miller and Tim Keenan were injured in the lead-up to the game, and their statuses remain unchanged. DeBoer stated that Keenan will miss this Saturday's game, but he is week-to-week going forward.
DeBoer stated that Miller was also week to week, but they are "optimistic there in the short future."
Senior Jah-Marien Latham and junior Miami (FL) transfer Isaiah Horton also suffered minor injuries in Tallahassee.
DeBoer stated Latham was "day-to-day" with a lower-body injury. Horton also suffered a lower-body injury and is considered day-to-day, but DeBoer said that he expects Horton to be good to go by the end of this week.
You have to believe Alabama will be cautious with any injuries right now. There aren't many gimme games on the schedule for the Crimson Tide with the way they looked against Florida State, but a matchup against Louisiana Monroe should be one, regardless.
Alabama needs to get healthy and get its keys back into position by the time it heads to Georgia, when the season could be on the line in Athens. For now, though, looking ahead is a foolish endeavor. Alabama needs to just focus on getting better, week by week, so that the season opener becomes just a bad memory and not an indication of what's to come.
