While it has felt inevitable for over a week now, Kalen DeBoer has made it official that Keelon Russell will be Alabama's starting quarterback in 2026. Per Yea-Alabama, the decision was officially made after Thursday's scrimmage, though reports indicated that Russell was trending in the competition prior.

Austin Mack put up a fight, and there's confidence within the program that Alabama can win games with him leading the way, but Russell's talent was undeniable. The former 5-star recruit was the best QB during the spring, and that extended over the summer and into fall camp. He immediately raises the ceiling of the offense.

Keelon Russell is the ceiling raiser that Alabama needed at QB in 2026

With a revamped offensive line and an unproven RB room, DeBoer and Ryan Grubb had little choice but to go with the quarterback that raises the ceiling of the entire offense. Mack is a good player, but Russell is special. Perhaps the trade-off is a lowered floor with a sophomore running the show, but he's an immense talent who is capable of putting the whole offense on his shoulders and taking it to another level.

Russell can make all the throws, but part of his appeal is his dual-threat ability. He's a special runner, too, and he is expected to make a significant impact on the ground. Expect a steady diet of RPOs with the sophomore at QB.

This competition felt over coming out of the first scrimmage last week, but it was extended a little further out of respect for Mack, who stayed to compete for a job that was always going to be difficult to win. He spent all of last season seeing Russell's talent up close and personal, and yet still decided to stay to compete. That kind of loyalty deserves to be rewarded.

But DeBoer has signaled all offseason and into preseason camp that there's no seniority that's going to matter now. It's all about the players who will give Alabama the best chance of winning football games right now. That's why sophomores like Luke Metz and Mal Waldrep have seemingly unseated veterans for spots. And it's why Russell will be Alabama's starting QB over the more seasoned Mack.

Russell's ascension to the top spot on the depth chart brings a ton of excitement two weeks before the season starts. His being named the starter with time to spare also shows that there was clear separation in the competition. With a buy game in the opener against East Carolina, DeBoer and Grubb could have been tempted to let the pair audition for the job in a game that Alabama should win handily. Instead, the job is Russell's, and now the offense can move forward with building chemistry together as the sophomore no longer has to split first-team reps.

Alabama fans will need to be patient with a young offense. There could be some growing pains up front, and Russell might make a baffling decision or two. But he'll also make some plays that perhaps no other QB in the country can make. His ceiling is a Heisman Trophy candidate, one who is capable of covering some of the warts around him.

The Russell era has arrived in Tuscaloosa with a whole lot of excitement.
