Alabama fans may have quickly anointed Keelon Russell as the heir apparent to Ty Simpson following his sterling performance at A-Day, it's important to remember that scrimmage was just one data point of many being considered as the QB battle wages on.
It's clear from comments that DeBoer made in the aftermath of A-Day that the battle is far from over, and Austin Mack is still very much alive in the battle.
It's also clear that DeBoer appears pretty comfortable with either option under center. Both appear more than capable of effectively running the Crimson Tide's offense. From the outside looking in, Russell would appear to provide a higher ceiling, but it's obvious that unless the offensive line and running game take a major step forward, we won't have to worry about the ceiling from down near the floor.
It'll be a pivotal summer for both Russell and Mack. DeBoer is setting the bar high for both.
“They know that a year ago there was so much improvement by all of them, and I think that was – even with Ty (Simpson), going from the spring to the fall, he came back and made another big jump,” DeBoer told reporters at the Regions ProAm on Wednesday. “And that’s what I would expect out of these guys, is as good as they did and a nice job that they had performing this spring, I’d expect for them to take another big leap here in the summer.
Kalen DeBoer expects a big leap from both Keelon Russell and Austin Mack this summer
This time last year, it was already a foregone conclusion that Simpson would be the starting quarterback for the 2025 season. He still put the work in over the offseason and, as DeBoer said, made a huge leap heading into fall camp.
So it's fair to expect, with Russell and Mack locked into a heated battle, that both will grind hard over the summer and take a leap in their own rights.
Perhaps the most interesting subplot is how each responds to the spring. Mack was the favorite coming into spring practice. Now, Russell will have to deal with the expectations of being the favorite, while Mack knows he has some ground to make up. The script has been flipped for both quarterbacks.
Whoever ultimately comes out on top, Alabama will have a quarterback capable of being among the best in the country. The success of the offense will depend on other factors outside of either's control.
