Rather than stating that Kane Wommack has a problem, let's call it a challenge and an opportunity. The Alabama Defensive Coordinator has so much player talent to choose from; in the hectic flow of a game, choices will not be simple.
Wommack and the defensive position group assistants will plan situational substitution decisions. Players on the sideline will focus on down and distance, knowing which situations they can anticipate being substituted in.
Still, at times sidelines can be a barely controlled frenzy. Wommack's individual game plans will consider when quick changes might lead to confusion. During games, Wommack will have a long menu of options. His choices will require quick decisions; and up-tempo opponents will compress his decision time even more.
Wommack's decisions would be simpler if Alabama had less defensive talent. The 2026 Alabama Crimson Tide is the opposite: a roster deep in talent at every position group. The secondary is arguably college football's best. The defensive line is deeper than Alabama has had in several seasons. Edge rushers and other linebackers are also a team strength.
Simply put, Kane Wommack has a bunch of guys who are too good to be left on the bench. Beyond 12 starters (including two frequent rotation players), Wommack can call on at least 12 backups who could strengthen the Alabama defense in certain situations.
Backups getting snaps will help the Alabama Crimson Tide
- Key Secondary Backups - Ivan Taylor, Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., Chuck McDonald, Carmelo O'Neal, and, when healthy, Jireh Edwards. Wommack recently used Kirkpatrick Jr. as an example of the versatility he (and others) provide to play multiple positions. In Dre's case, he can play Husky and Strong Safety.
- Linebacker Backups - Jah-Marien Latham, Justin Hill, Xavier Griffin, and QB Reese
- Defensive Line - Desmond Umeozulu, Jah-Mariaen Latham, Edric Hill, and Steve Bolo Mboumoua. Zulu and Latham can play inside or outside, as can projected starter Devan Thompkins.
Alabama's depth of defensive talent is no 'too much candy for a dime' issue. The weapons at Kane Wommack's disposal and the flexibility to use them could propel Alabama to becoming a championship contender.
