Karma caught up to Tennessee fans after lame shot at Bama and Kalen DeBoer

Alabama won't get its shot at Tennessee until the Third Saturday in October, but Georgia delivered a bit of revenge for the Tide on Saturday.

The entire SEC, including that team Alabama meets up with on the Third Saturday of October, had their jokes after the Tide’s Week 1 loss, and they didn’t stop after Kalen DeBoer righted the ship with a 73-0 Week 2 win. However, karma caught up with Tennessee fans after a lame troll job on College Gameday in Knoxville on Saturday.

As Kirk Herbstreit interviewed DeBoer from the field in Tuscaloosa before Alabama’s 38-14 win over Wisconsin in Week 3, Vols fans behind Herbstreit and the Gameday desk began to do Florida State’s Tomahawk chop. It wasn’t clear if DeBoer could hear the chant or not, but he kept his composure and didn’t break, even as Pat McAfee broke into laughter and addressed it directly.

Clearly, Vols fans didn’t get to DeBoer, not that any noise in Knoxville could possibly be louder than the calls for his job from Crimson Tide fans much closer to Tuscaloosa, but Alabama continued to handle its business while Tennessee fell flat.

Tennessee dropped its SEC opener to Georgia after fans trolled the Crimson Tide

Not only did Josh Heupel’s team manage to blow a 21-7 first-quarter lead, allowing 20 unanswered points in the second and third quarters, but the Vols blew a chance to win the game in regulation with kicker Max Gilbert badly missing a 43-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds remaining in the game.

Then, in overtime, Tennessee began with a Gilbert field goal before Georgia handed the ball off three times, ran the ball down the Vols' throats, and scored the game-winning touchdown on a one-yard score from Illinois transfer Josh McCray.

Now, Alabama might have an entry in the loss column, but the Vols have a blemish in conference play, and that’s much more significant. Like Tennessee, the Crimson Tide also open their SEC slate with Georgia, after both teams take a bye in Week 4, and having the Bulldogs remain inside the top 10 of the AP Poll is an added bonus to Tennessee’s loss.

Alabama and Tennessee can settle the score in Tuscaloosa on October 18, but Georgia helped to deliver a bit of karmic revenge in Knoxville, and for now, that’s good enough.
