Alabama and Florida State last met on the gridiron in 2017. That game was also a season opener, but it was played in Atlanta as part of the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff. The Crimson Tide defeated the Seminoles in a Top 5 matchup, 24-7.
This will be the sixth all-time meeting between the Tide and the 'Noles. Alabama is 3-1-1 overall. Alabama won meetings in 1965, 1974, and 2017. Florida State won in 2007, though they had to vacate that victory. The two teams tied in Birmingham in 1967.
This will be Alabama's first trip to Doak Campbell Stadium. Florida State will make the return trip to Tuscaloosa in 2026 as part of this home-and-home series.
Alabama and Florida State both have a lot to prove in 2025
Coming off their first 4 loss season in 17 years, Kalen DeBoer and Alabama are hoping to get back to the standard in 2025. They want to prove to the college football world that Alabama is still Alabama. They have the talent to do so, and on paper are one of the elite teams in the SEC for next season.
They will be breaking in an inexperienced QB, however, regardless of who wins the competition. The road game in Tallahassee will be the first career start for either Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, or Keelon Russell.
Not many teams in the country have more to prove than Mike Norvell and Florida State. After finishing undefeated in the regular season and winning the ACC in 2023, the Seminoles completely bottomed out in 2024. They went a dismal 2-10, and the previous year's record is the only thing that allowed Norvell to keep his job.
He won't survive another disastrous season.
Norvell flipped the roster almost entirely with a slew of Transfer Portal additions. Former Boston College QB Tommy Castellanos will look to provide stability at QB. He'll have help at the skill positions with Florida State's additions of Duce Robinson (USC) and Squirrel White (Tennessee).
Former Alabama RB Roydell Williams is the projected starting RB.
FanDuel currently lists Alabama as an 11.5-point road favorite.
