Latest Monshun Sales update has trouble written all over it for Kalen DeBoer and Bama

In the transfer portal, Alabama looked to Auburn transfer Cam Coleman to address the wide receiver position. However, Texas came in and blew the Crimson Tide away.

Missing out on Coleman was just one more demonstration of why Kalen DeBoer and general manager Courtney Morgan have been all-in on high school recruiting. The Tide have NIL resources, certainly. Not enough to pluck their chosen veteran out of the portal, but enough to assemble elite high school classes year after year.

Now, however, the Longhorns are sniffing around Alabama’s top high school WR target, 5-star Monshun Sales. According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Texas is emerging as a top school for Sales, the 6-foot-5 deep-threat from Indianapolis, who is ranked as the No. 7 overall player in the country and the top WR.

Texas is in the mix for 5-star Alabama WR target Monshun Sales

Texas already has a commitment from the No. 2 WR in the class, Easton Royal. However, Royal has been heavily pursued by LSU since Lane Kiffin took over in Baton Rouge, and could be viewed as a flip candidate. Steve Sarkisian has enough money in his warchest in Austin to go after both Sales and Royal, but more likely, Texas’s recent pursuit of Sales is Sark hedging his bets against a Royal flip.

Of course, with the No. 1 WR in the country, Texas isn’t the only program interested. Indiana has been in the mix along with Ohio State and Miami. Those are all heavy-hitters in the NIL space, so Sales’ price won’t be cheap.

Seemingly, Alabama can afford to pay top dollar for high school recruits, and has done so regularly in the DeBoer era, but if the price continues to get driven up, landing Sales could have knock-on effects for the rest of the class.

DeBoer has proven himself to be a high-level recruiter since taking over in Tuscaloosa. He’s up for the challenge of competing with Texas, but with oil money flowing through the state and a major metropolitan base in Austin, the Longhorns have committed to outspending everyone in college football, so it’s trouble any time Sarkisian starts sniffing around a top recruit.
