Ignoring computer models and finding much love for the Alabama Crimson Tide is a challenge. After reviewing several post-Week 9 SEC Power Rankings, no ranking higher than No. 5 could be found. Alabama's range in the power rankings is small and consistent: No. 5 to No. 7.
Computer models value the Crimson Tide more highly. Kenneth Massey has Alabama has the SEC's second-best team. ESPN's FPI has The Crimson Tide as the SEC's third-best. Jeff Sagarin and Bill Connelly's models have Alabama as the SEC's fourth-best.
Human power rankings, rather than algorithms, may strive hard to be objective. Still, all of them, especially mine, are opinions, shaped by subjectivity. Last week, I held on to my baseline level of optimism about the Crimson Tide. I power-ranked Alabama as the SEC's No. 3 team. That was probably too high. This week I've adjusted, with the Crimson Tide at No. 4, with Texas and Ole Miss close behind.
SEC and Alabama SEC Power Rankings
As I've done recently, other sources (and opnions) are included.
- No. 1 - Georgia Bulldogs (7-1) - The Bulldogs are vulnerable, or they would not have lost to Auburn, but Kirby has the SEC's best team.
- No. 2 - LSU Bengal Tigers (6-2) - LSU gets the No. 2 nod because Sam Leavitt has gone from a turnover machine to the efficient QB he was expected to be in Lane Kiffin's offense.
- No. 3 - Tennessee Vols (6-2) - Alabama's meltdown in Knoxville cannot be ignored.
- No. 4 - Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2) - Opportunity awaits in Baton Rouge
- No. 5 - Texas Longhorns (6-2) - Arch may not be special but the Texas defense is superb.
- No. 6 - Kentucky Wildcats (7-1) - The Cats beat LSU, but lost to the Crimson Tide. Other sources, including Matt Melton and Chase Goodbread, rank the Cats No. 2. Maybe Chase and Matt are correct, and I'm wrong.
- No. 7 - Ole Miss Rebels (6-2) - Good offense, not-good defense.
- No. 8 Missouri Tigers (6-2) - Though he didn't play much on Saturday, Ahmad Hardy is back for the Tigers and should provide a big boost.
- No. 9 South Carolina (5-3) - The Gamecocks are dangerous again.
- No. 10 Florida Gators; No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners; No. 12 Texas A&M Aggies, No. 13 Auburn Tigers; No. 14 Mississippi State; No. 15 Arkansas Razorbacks; No. 16 Vanderbilt Commodores
