Mercer is a good team and the Bears are the perfect next Alabama Football opponent
By Ronald Evans
Many college football fans don't realize the Mercer Bears are better than many FBS teams. The FCS Bears are 9-1 and have already clinched a Playoff bid as the Southern Conference's top team. The Bears are ranked No. 9 in the latest FCS Coaches Poll Top 25.
Using his SP+ algorithm, Bill Connelly ranks 764 college football teams. He has Mercer ranked No. 105, which is higher than 32 FBS teams. Big Ten fans will whine about Alabama playing Mercer while ignoring that Ohio State plays three FBS teams Connelly ranks lower than Mercer.
Based on the second CFB Playoff rankings, the Selection Committee has no real interest in awarding teams for tough schedules. That makes Mercer a perfect opponent for the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Mike Rodack provided a useful summary of how good the Mercer Bears are, "Mercer, is No. 1 among 123 FCS schools in defensive interceptions (21), No. 1 in rushing defense (54.7 ypg allowed), No. 1 in third down defense (21.4%) and No. 2 in turnover margin (+14)."
Alabama Football Backups
Many Alabama fans see the Mercer game as an opportunity to get backups game reps. In addition, any starter not close to 100% could take the weekend off without risking a Crimson Tide loss. Jaeden Roberts is a good example of a guy who probably should sit against the Bears. DeVonta Smith might be another. Most Alabama first-teamers will play. Hopefully, many of them, especially Jalen Milroe will exit the game early. Ty Simpson needs game reps throwing the football. DaShawn Jones, who did well backing up Smith at Husky against LSU, would benefit from extended snaps. The winning margin should not impact Playoff rankings despite the fickleness of the Playoff Selection Committee.
Mercer's dual-threat quarterbacks can challenge the Crimson Tide defense. However, the Bears' offensive line will be at a significant disadvantage against Alabama's defensive front. The Bears' defense versus the Alabama offense should be a mismatch. In Mercer's one loss this season, Samford scored 55 points.
Television viewing of the game is restricted to streaming channels provided by ESPN (ESPN+) and the SEC Network (SEC Network+). Kickoff is scheduled a few minutes after 1:00 PM CST.
