Alabama basketball fans were dismayed when Caleb Holt chose Arizona over the Crimson Tide. Holt was 'the' big get Alabama aimed for in the 2026 class. Adding the 5-star Holt to Alabama's class of Jaxon Richardson, Qayden Samuels, and Tarris Bouie might have made the '26 class Alabama's best ever.
In the end, it was Alabama or Arizona for Holt, and the Wildcats won. Was Arizona's financial package much greater than the Crimson Tide's? Alabama programs draw a line at what is believed to be a top and fair offer. Alabama does not bid against itself. If a strong offer combined with a Nate Oats discount is not enough, so be it.
Nate Oats spoke about roster building and player payrolls before leaving for the SEC Tournament. "I'm gonna say this, first and foremost, I firmly believe that we're gonna get the right players for our program, and we want players that come here for reasons that don't have money at the top. Oats added that teams who add players who "prioritize money over everything else" create roster problems.
Nate Oats assures Alabama fans the Crimson Tide will be competitive
Oats stated that Alabama will be competitive with the combined revenue share and NIL-Go-approved NIL deals. He made it clear that going outside or beyond compensation rules would not occur. "I'm not going to risk my job, nor is Greg Byrne, nor the kids, nor is the school going to do anything outside of what is allowed. With the money that’s going to be delivered through both rev share and NIL Go, we’re in as good a place as anybody in the country."
There have been claims that some programs embrace a different approach. A more aggressive roster-building strategy might be termed spending 'whatever it takes'. Wisely, Nate Oats did not accuse anyone, though he did say some of the reported player deals are "hard to believe."
Alabama's philosophy of roster building it admirable. Beyond that, it is also practical. Some other schools have resource bases with deeper pockets than the University of Alabama. That is a fact, not a complaint. With Nate Oats' popular coaching style, ability to attract top recruits, and putting players in the NBA, having less money to spend may not matter.
