Looking at the 2025 Alabama Football schedule and without much debate, the most dangerous team is the Oklahoma Sooners. Based on the struggles of the 2024 season, it might sound crazy, but the unknown with a high ceiling is what makes the Sooners so dangerous. The injuries at the WR spot and the QB struggles made the first year in the SEC for Brent Venables one he would love to forget. There are questions about whether he has what it takes to be a head coach in Norman, as two of his first three seasons haven't lived up to the high expectations.
Venables seems to have addressed last year's offensive struggles, bringing in arguably the biggest transfer portal win, adding John Mateer, who threw for over 3,100 yards and ran for over 800 on the ground last year in Pullman.
I think many are still wondering how the Jackson Arnold experience went so wrong last year, but they seemed to hit the nail on the head, replacing him with Mateer. He has experience, and with an upgrade with talent around him on the offensive side of the ball, he could very well be a dark horse candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
Mateer's transfer should be seamless as OU made sure to bring his offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, with him. If you got to watch the Washington State offense last season, it was electric and has the possibility to be scary in the SEC as well. In addition, they also added former Cal running back Jadyn Ott, who is looking to get back to his 2023 production this season. The wide receiver room was a M.A.S.H. unit last year, and just this unit staying healthy will do wonders for the offensive production that was seriously lacking last season.
From an Alabama standpoint, there should be little problem for the team getting motivated for this game, considering the embarrassing performance last year in Norman. In addition to it being a revenge game, it never hurts that this year's game is in Tuscaloosa, where even last season the Crimson Tide went undefeated. Overall, the defense was the bright spot of last year's team, but there is still a concern going into this season on how this defense adjusts to QBs with mobility.
We all saw Jackson Arnold have a field day on the ground last November, and based on what I've seen from both, Mateer is far more dangerous with his legs. Kane Wommack will earn his money preparing for his explosiveness with both his arm and legs. A lot can change between now and November, but on paper, there isn't possibly a more dangerous team on the schedule based on potential and pieces put into place for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2025.
