Alabama 'hasn't played anybody yet Pawl' can be fairly said about the Crimson Tide. Even if the Tide had played better teams, data from just two games would not be definitive. Rather than stats, eyeball scrutiny will have to do for now. What I see about the Alabama Crimson Tide defense is the beginning of something special.
I have been waiting for this Alabama Crimson Tide defense for years. At times, I've doubted there would ever be a return to an Alabama defense that would dominate and punish, Saban-style. Kane Wommack may have built just that for the 2026 season. We can't know for sure yet. For now, belief must suffice. I believe that the one word to describe what this defense will become is 'elite'.
If he ever was Kane Wommack is no Alabama problem
In some of the eight losses Kalen DeBoer has coached at Alabama, Kane Wommack has been questioned. His defenses have been blamed for not being aggressive enough and lacking physical toughness. Crimson Tide fans yearn for a repeat of the killer Nick Saban defenses in 2009-2018. During those seasons, Alabama's Defensive Efficiency was ranked No. 1 in four seasons and No. 2 in three seasons. Saban's lowest ranking (after 2007) was in 2019, when the Tide's defensive efficiency was No. 10. Alabama ranked No. 9 in Saban's last season, the same as Kane Wommack's defense last season.
No one compares Wommack to Saban, and Alabama fans have hoped Nick would tutor the Tide's DC. To a small extent, that happened in the offseason when Saban suggested the Tide play more press coverage.
Alabama's defensive dominance during Saban's tenure will never be matched during any span of several seasons. Still, in Lexington, Kane Wommack's defense resembled some of Saban's best.
Certainly, Alabama will face better teams and better offenses. In this era of college football, even the best defenses take some lumps. When that happens, the Crimson Tide offense will have to carry its load. The Tide's offense may not need to become elite, as long as the defense is. I guess that 'elite' is what Kane Wommack has built this roster for and what his guys will become. Hopefully, the Crimson Tide will not have to come to the rescue often as it did against Kentucky.
