The final day of the regular season for softball is here, and Patrick Murphy has Alabama in position to potentially capture a share of - or the outright - SEC Championship.
At 46-6 overall and 18-5 in SEC play, the Crimson Tide comes into Saturday just a half game behind Oklahoma in the SEC standings. Along with taking care of business on their end, they'll need a little bit of help to capture a piece of the program's first SEC crown in seven years.
Alabama has already captured the series win this weekend over South Carolina, winning the first two games of the series in Tuscaloosa. But it needs a clean sweep to position itself to win the conference.
And it needs help from Texas A&M.
Alabama softball needs an assist from Texas A&M on Saturday
Texas A&M took the first game of the series in College Station against Oklahoma and will face the Sooners in a doubleheader on Saturday. A split by the Aggies and a win by the Crimson Tide over the Gamecocks would mean Alabama earns a split of the SEC regular season title with the Sooners.
Alabama can win the SEC Championship outright by beating South Carolina and Texas A&M sweeping the doubleheader on Saturday.
Alabama would have a half-game lead going into the final day of the regular season if it had won the series last weekend in Knoxville. The Tide routed Tennessee 12-0 in the opening game of that series before dropping the final two.
In any case, it's been an incredible season for Murphy and his team. Silencing the doubters, Alabama has been among the best teams in college softball this season after talk of the program trending in the wrong direction in recent seasons.
Grabbing a share of, or winning outright, the SEC on Saturday would be the achievement this team deserves.
Roll Tide and, for one day only, Gig Em!
