With spring practice over and the dog days of summer in the college football offseason upon us, engagement will be low for the talking heads who still have to fill television time and podcast commitments.
Hopefully, you can find better things to do with your time than listen to what people like Paul Finebaum have to say, like going fishing, hanging out at the beach, or even having a root canal.
Because people like Finebaum live to stoke the flames. If the embers underneath Kalen DeBoer's seat in Tuscaloosa have cooled a little after a playoff bid last year and a contract extension, Finebaum is here to poke at them and dumb a little kerosene on top.
In a recent appearance on Crain and Cone, Finebaum brought DeBoer's name up in a conversation he didn't belong in. The hosts were doing a segment on college football's most overrated coach, and while Finebaum himself stated that DeBoer wasn't "overrated," he couldn't help but throw a jab at Alabama's head coach anyway:
"I don't think he's overrated, I just think he's a bad fit," Finebaum said about DeBoer.
Paul Finebaum calls Kalen DeBoer a "bad fit" at Alabama
Finebaum didn't further delve into the WHY of this particular take, but don't worry. He's got the next four months until the season kicks off to get into that. And boy oh boy, you know he's going to get into it.
The DeBoer takes, both nationally and within the Alabama fanbase, are frankly exhausting. Too many people are talking in definitives about his coaching tenure without knowing one way or another how this thing is going to ultimately go. That's the thing about the future: it's impossible to fully predict.
Maybe DeBoer is in over his head. Maybe he will prove to be a bad fit at Alabama, and this thing will trend south over the next few years before the Crimson Tide can afford to fire him following Greg Byrne's vote of confidence.
If it's all the same to you and people like Finebaum, I prefer we just let it play out. We'll have an answer on all of that soon enough.
