Alabama was 'one and done' in 1975 with a furious comeback against Arizona State that fell short in a 97-94 loss. The Tide's opening game in 1976 was the opposite. Alabama dominated North Carolina, winning 79-64. The second-round game in 1976 was against what became the undefeated National Champion Indiana Hoosiers. In the toughest game Bobby Knight's team played all season, Alabama led late but came up short 74-69. The game was truly a best and a worst for Alabama.
Alabama played 14 NCAA Tournament games in the 1980s and compiled a 7-7 record. The best win was probably a 58-56 second-round win over Illinois in 1986 or the 1982 69-68 first-round win over St. John's; that was practically a home game for the then Redmen, with the game played in Uniondale, NY.
Three games deserve to be called the worst. They were: a 73-50 first-round loss to Lamar, a 49-48 first-round loss to Illinois State, and a 103-82 second-round loss to Providence. The Friars were coached by Rick Pitino and led on the court by Billy 'The Kid' Donovan.
