Alabama has seen some significant momentum in computer rankings fresh off of a 42-10 thumping of Wisconsin at Camp Randall Stadium last weekend. Say what you will about the relative quality of the Badgers, but a 32-point road win over a Big Ten opponent is impressive regardless of who it comes against.
According to 11 of the 44 computer models used to make up the Massey Composite, Alabama is the No. 1 team in the country. The Massey Ratings officially have Alabama as No. 2 behind Texas, which matches the Crimson Tide's standings in ESPN's FPI and SP+.
The Massey Ratings is a composite computer ranking utilizing 44 different computer models to create a composite ranking. During the BCS era from 1999-2013 it was used as one of the official formulas for the BCS rankings.
The computers think Alabama is underrated in the human polls, where both the Coaches Poll and the AP Poll rank the Crimson Tide No. 4 behind Georgia, Texas, and Ohio State.
Obviously, any ranking, computer or human generated, is subjective this early in the season as there aren't enough on-field data points for a consensus. After three games, it's good to see the Crimson Tide grading out highly.
The computer models that have Alabama No. 1 are as follows: Packard, Power Up Rankings, Team Rankings Predictive, Steinberg, Wilson, Bihl, Born, B Wilson Empirical, Dwiggins, Kelly Ford, and Laz Index.
