3 bold predictions for Alabama Football vs. Georgia
Alabama Football faces a familiar foe this weekend with Kirby Smart and his Georgia Bulldogs coming to town for one of the biggest games of the college football regular season.
It will take Alabama's best game of the season to date to come out on top. The Crimson Tide enters the matchup as a rare home underdog, with plenty to prove to the recruits in attendance and the millions of viewers watching at home.
The talk since Nick Saban retired in January has been that the run of dominance Alabama experienced over the last 17-years is over. How could that success be maintained anywhere close to a similar level with Saban gone? Kalen DeBoer understands the importance of this game, and the players want to deliver for their head coach.
Here's three bold predictions for the Crimson Tide on Saturday night:
3. Alabama forces two turnovers
The last time Georgia turned the ball over was against Alabama in the SEC Championship game last December in Atlanta. It was a pivotal moment in the game, directly leading to a Crimson Tide field goal in a game that was decided by three points.
Since then, Georgia has played four consecutive clean games. An impressive feat, no doubt, but the Bulldogs are due to a turnover or two. The Alabama defense has forced four turnovers through two games - two each against Western Kentucky and Wisconsin. They didn't net a turnover against USF.
Carson Beck had several turnover worthy throws last year that Alabama couldn't take advantage of. Kristian Story, now at Kentucky, dropped an interception in the red zone that would've taken points off the board for the Bulldogs. Malachi Moore saw a pick go right through his hands, too.
If given the opportunity this year, and I think that opportunity will come, I expect Moore or new starting safety Keon Sabb to come up with an interception that swings this game more toward Alabama's favor.
2. Kendrick Law eclipses 100+ yards from scrimmage
I've been calling for a Kendrick Law breakout game all season. He still only has the one catch against Western Kentucky. He's been left out of the box score the last two games. Law is making an impact, being the Crimson Tide's best downfield blocker. But eventually, Law is too talented not to make an impact with the ball in his hands.
Law is perhaps the fastest player on the Tide's roster, and with so much attention being paid to Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard down the field, this is the perfect time to get the ball to Law on crossing routes, pop passes, and even designed runs.
If Georgia is playing their safeties deep out of fear of Milroe hitting the deep ball, then the middle of the field will be open. If Milroe can't make the intermediate throws, then DeBoer and OC Nick Sheridan can still find creative ways to attack the weak spots of the Georgia defense.
I think this is the breakout game we've all been waiting for with Law, and he'll go over 100-yards from scrimmage and be a big reason the Crimson Tide comes out on top.
1. Jalen Milroe leaves the game as the Heisman favorite
Jalen Milroe has been one of the most polarizing players in the country since he took over as Alabama's starting quarterback last season, even amongst those in his own fanbase.
After Saturday night, there will be no more division. All Alabama fans, and all pundits across the country, will accept Milroe for what he is: one of the very best players in college football and the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.
I think this is a game Milroe has had circled. It's his chance to prove to all the doubters that he can dissect an NFL-level defense and has the goods to lead his team to the promised land.
Milroe is going to terrorize Georgia with his arms and legs, leaving no doubt to who the best player on the field was despite sharing it with the potential No. 1 pick in Carson Beck.
