Alabama Baseball: Crimson Tide ranked 19th in pre-season poll and two awards given out at ABCA Banquet
A fresh start to a new era of Alabama Baseball is right around the corner with the Rob Vaughn era set to begin. Rob Vaughn is taking over after a scandal-filled season where former Head Coach Brad Bohannon was fired for a gambling scandal. Vaughn has overhauled the roster bringing in many transfers with eight expected to have massive roles on the team.
Despite heavy turnover on the roster and within the coaching staff the Alabama Baseball team has high expectations entering 2024. D1 Baseball one of the top baseball outlets has ranked the Crimson Tide as the 19th-ranked team in their pre-season rankings. The Alabama Baseball team is the fifth-ranked team in a loaded SEC with powerhouses in LSU and Florida expected to continue their reign over the conference.
The addition of Rob Vaughn and retaining assistant coach Jay Jackson has set the program up for long-term success. Vaughn is coming off back-to-back regular season championships at Maryland and has brought in a massive transfer class that will bring excitement to Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
The program also received two massive honors at the American Baseball Coaches Association awards banquet. Former Alabama Baseball coach Jim Wells was inducted into the group's Hall of Fame. Wells was the Head Coach of the Alabama Baseball program from 1995-2009 winning two SEC regular season championships, Six SEC Tournament championships, and the SEC Coach of the Year award twice. Over his 15 seasons as the Alabama Baseball team's head coach, Wells led the team to a 617-321 record.
Assistant coach Jay Jackson was given the Assistant Coach of the Year award a much-deserved honor after everything Jackson did in 2023. Jackson took over after Brad Bohannon's gambling scandal and helped right the ship as the Alabama Baseball team leading the team to a 13-6 record leading the program to its first Super Regional appearance since 2014 and a Regional Championship going 3-0 at regions. Retaining Jackson after his incredible coaching job as an assistant where he'll continue to oversee the pitching staff was by far the biggest move of the off-season.
Alabama Baseball: High expectations in 2024
Despite losing some of the team's better players in Colby Shelton and Andrew Pinckney the Alabama Baseball team will have some of its highest expectations in recent years. Coach Rob Vaughn brought in exciting outfielders in transfers in Evan Sleight, TJ McCants, and Ian Petrutz all of whom have exciting Division One success. Coach Rob Vaughn has also landed a few of the most highly regarded recruits in the country lining up for what looks like an exciting few years for the program. It's far too early to tell but, Vaughn looks like a slam dunk hire for Greg Bryne along with Nate Oats and hopefully Kalen DeBoer.
