Alabama Football is back with the first Fall Camp session on Wednesday. The first of the Crimson Tide's 20 practice sessions will conclude around 11:00 AM CST. Shortly after the practice session, Kalen DeBoer will provide a review and answer media questions.
The early part of the practice session includes a media viewing period. The schedule for subsequent practice sessions has not been released. It is known, there will be a Fan Day practice session in Bryant-Denny on Aug. 11.
Kalen DeBoer will field depth chart questions on Wednesday. It will be interesting how the information he shares compares to past seasons with Nick Saban.
Day One Depth Chart Predictions
Instead of each position, let's focus on the positions for which there is no clear first-unit player.
- Right Tackle - Offseason indications the new RT will be Wilkin Formby or Elijah Pritchett. Projected starter: Wilkin Formby. The redshirt freshman is praised for his strength. He will have to show that at 6'7" and 320 lbs., he can handle speed rushers. Alabama defenders will give him ample camp competition.
- Running Back - Justice Haynes or Jam Miller could be listed as co-starters. Expect a committee approach with Richard Young also gaining plenty of snaps during the season.
- Husky - It is an easy call to pencil in DeVonta Smith. Because of his multiple past injuries, there are some concerns he is 100% healthy. Look for freshman, Red Morgan and transfer King Mack to push Smith.
- Wolf (OLB) - Write down Quandarrius Robinson as the starter but this will likely be more of a rotation position with Keanu Koht getting plenty of snaps. Kane Wommack has mentioned sub-packages to take advantage of the Tide's depth at the position. Though less experienced, Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre have so much potential, that getting them into a regular mix could pay dividends.
- Bandit - This should be another rotation position that could list multiple starters. The first day of camp grouping will probably be Jah-Marien Latham, Keon Keeley or LT Overton, and Jordan Renaud. Overton, Keeley, and Renaud could play on the inside of the defensive line when needed.
- Cornerback - Put Domani Jackson down as one starter at corner. The other one is TBD. It could be freshman Zabien Brown, or Wake Forest transfer DaShawn Jones, or redshirt freshman Jahlil Hurley, or freshman Jaylen Mbakwe, or freshman Zay Mincey. That's a lot of 'ors' and the competition may not end with the start of the season.
