Alabama Football: More to Helow hire than knowledge of Wolverines
Ahead of the Rose Bowl matchup against the Michigan Wolverines Nick Saban and the Alabama Football team have hired former Michigan Linebackers coach George Helow. Helow coached at Michigan from 2021-2022 starting as the team's linebackers coach after spending 2020 as the special teams coach at Maryland. George Helow started his coaching career with the Alabama Football team as a defensive intern before stints at Florida State, Georgia, and Colorado State.
While the hiring may seem like a move for the Alabama Football team to gain intel on the Wolverine's the move isn't exactly what it seems. Harlow will likely replace outside linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler who is rumored to be the next defensive coordinator at Mississippi under new hire Jeff Lebby.
This is seemingly a great hire for Nick Saban and the Alabama Football program. Helow has an impressive resume coaching under Saban, Kirby Smart, and Jim Harbaugh. Helow has won National Championships at Alabama and Florida State bringing a championship resume to Tuscaloosa.
Alabama Football: Coaching Changes despite keeping both Coordinators
Despite retaining both offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and defensive coordinator Kevin Steele the Alabama Football team will likely lose a few coaches to promotions around the country. As one of the top programs in America every season the Alabama Football program is a top destination for top tier coaching talent. Mississippi State and their new head coach Jeff Lebby looked in conference and poached outside linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler who helped develop Dallas Turner, Chris Braswell, and Will Anderson Jr among other outside linebackers. The outside linebacker coach will be an important role for the program entering 2024 as they'll lose Chris Braswell and Dallas Turner to the NFL Draft with no clear next man up behind the duo. The next coach to fill the role will be responsible for developing the next pair of dominant edge rushers with only the off-season to fill the roles.
