Alabama Football vs. Georgia: A matchup history
Alabama football will face off against Georgia for the 74th time in history when the two teams collide on Saban Field on Saturday night in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama leads the all-time series over Georgia 43-26-4, but this will be the first time the Crimson Tide has matched up against the Bulldogs without Nick Saban on the sideline since 2003. Which is good news for Georgia fans, just ask The Bulldawg Report:
Georgia's record against Alabama also gets better if you remove the six games Kirby Smart coached against the Crimson Tide. As good of a coach as Smart has been, Saban and Alabama were his Achilles Heel. Smart is 1-5 against Alabama. The one was a big one, with Georgia defeating Alabama in the 2022 National Championship.
But otherwise, this series was one-sided when Nick Saban got to Tuscaloosa. Alabama is 8-2 against Georgia since 2007. The Bulldogs won the 2022 title game and a 2007 game in Tuscaloosa during Saban's first year in Tuscaloosa.
Alabama has ripped Georgia's hearts out time and time again. There was the 2012 SEC Championship Game and the Bulldogs coming up a few yards short; 2nd and 26 in the 2018 title game; Jalen Hurt's heroics in the 2018 SEC Championship; and ending Georgia's long winning streak in last season's SEC Championship.
We've also seen some blowouts, like the blackout gamein 2008; the 2015 game in Athens that got the Tide back on track; and the 2021 SEC Championship.
Most meetings between the two have come in SEC and National Championship settings. During the 17-years Saban was the coach, there was only four total meetings on campuses. Alabama hasn't traveled to Athens since 2015, and this will be Georgia's first trip to Tuscaloosa since 2020, and the first in front of a full stadium since 2007.
This series dates all the way back to 1895. Georgia won the first ever meeting, played in Columbus, Georgia.
Expansion led to the death of the SEC's eastern and western divisions, which should lead to the Crimson Tide and Bulldogs meeting in the regular season more often.
Saturday's matchup will begin a new era. It'll be Kalen DeBoer and Kirby Smart's first meeting against one another. Can DeBoer continue the run of dominance Alabama has enjoyed? Or can Smart rid himself of the Crimson kryptonite?
